Hawaii State INBRE

Outreach Core

As the primary link between the original BRIN and INBRE, the Outreach Core extends the research thrust into the Community Colleges and, indirectly, Brigham Young University – Hawaii. Preserving collaborative academic linkages established through BRIN, the Core leader will continue to promote research and student participation in research efforts at both the lead and the baccalaureate institutions. These student – faculty and faculty – mentor relationships are defined through memoranda of understanding, thus ensuring stability to these outreach collaborations. Each faculty participant’s role will be reviewed annually by the Steering Committee to assess progress towards meeting the INBRE specific aims. The Outreach Core provides a direct means of meeting the fourth Specific Aim. The Outreach Core has three major goals:

  1. To assist with expanding biomedical research interest, knowledge, skills and funding and students at associate and baccalaureate colleges across the State that are not part of the INBRE Research Core.
  2. To provide recruitment and training activities for undergraduate and graduate students through didactic and research experiences, and to strengthen the pipeline of promising students into the graduate science programs in Hawaii.
  3. To improve science awareness and training for the workforce and general public.
