Research Core

The Research Core aims to "increase the number of nationally competitive investigators." It is structured to provide a few highly promising junior faculty with a successful biomedical researcher for mentoring and guidance. The core also provides necessary resources for the junior investigators to obtain preliminary data that can be incorporated into independent research grants, especially R01 grants.

The Research Core will be comprised of three thematic projects; the themes relate to the cellular basis of immunological and neurological diseases from the perspective of immunology and cell signaling, cell and neurobiology, and developmental biology. The Principal Investigator will serve as Core leader to ensure project coordination. However, to provide theme-specific expertise, each project will be headed by a senior faculty member (“Senior Investigator”) who will provide leadership for all of its activities. These include the project’s overall research plan, budget monitoring, mentoring, student recruitment and training, and adherence to the network mission. Importantly, the Senior Investigators will set each project’s standard for research excellence and rigor. These thematic projects lie at the heart of the INBRE scientific program, for they incorporate the baccalaureate colleges and students into the mainstream research enterprise at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. They are instrumental to the attainment of the first three Specific Aims.
